Caruso's Late Goal Lifts 'Cats Past Spiders

RICHMOND, Va. — Sophia Caruso scored in the 85th minute to break a tie and propel Davidson to a 2-1 win over Richmond in Atlantic 10 Conference women's soccer Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 6-3-1 overall and 4-2 in the A-10. It's the most league wins in a season for the Wildcats since joining in 2014.
"Physical battle on the road today," said Davidson coach Adam Denton. "Tough conditions with the wind today, which impacted the game for both teams. We rode our luck a couple of times on a couple of their chances, but when we maintained possession, we were able to create opportunities of our own."
Caruso's goal was her second of the year and came on a long shot from the right side. It was similar to the one she had against Richmond in the Wildcats' 2-0 home win over the Spiders on March 11.
"I was really pleased with the response, and we got a great strike from Sophia to win the game," said Denton.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Rachel Schleicher in the 16th minute. Her first goal of the year came on an assist from Hailey Braemer, who played the ball off her back heel and through the legs of a Richmond defender.
"A good individual play by Hailey setting up Rachel, and Rachel finished well," said Denton.
Richmond evened the score at 1-1 with a goal by TJ Anderson in the 76th minute.
