Field Hockey Fights in 2-1 Loss to Longwood
3/6/2021 5:28:00 PM | Field Hockey
Evie Lake scored and the Davidson field hockey team made a push at the end against Longwood Saturday, but the Wildcats came up short in a 2-1 loss on Senior Day at Belk Turf Field.
Â
The Wildcats are now 1-2 with Atlantic 10 play set to begin next week.
"I thought we showed a lot of fight today, especially in the closing minutes of the game," said coach Zoe Almquist. "Longwood was a strong opponent, and we matched up pretty well against them today. I think we had both some learning moments and some other moments today that show the potential this group has."
Â
Longwood led 1-0 at the intermission after Isis Vrolijks' second-period goal and made it 2-0 with 11:41 to play. But the Wildcats answered quickly with Lake scoring after a long breakaway with 10:25 left. Lake controlled the ball, went the distance and side-stepped keeper Abigail Goldberg to angle a shot in from the left.
Â
That gave the Wildcats a chance to tie it, and they played the final 5:55 without Cato Roell in the cage. Corynne Hammit had the best scoring opportunity late, putting a shot on goal with 4:57 left.
Â
Roell recorded five saves against an aggressive Lancers attack.
