DAVIDSON, N.C. -- In their penultimate weekend of the 2021 spring season, the Davidson Wildcats are set to take on Elon University and East Carolina University to round out non-conference action. First, the 'Cats will travel to face the Phoenix on Saturday, before closing out the home season from Belk Arena on Sunday with Pirates.
Complete coverage for this weekend's slate can be found at davidsonwildcats.com/coverage and @DavidsonVB on Twitter and Instagram.
ABOUT THE PHOENIX... Davidson is 4-7 against Elon dating back to November of 2007. Of those four wins, the 'Cats have captured two on the road and two from inside Belk Arena. This spring, the Phoenix are 3-3, picking up two wins over UNC Wilmington and one against Greensboro. Leah Daniel leads Elon with 3.79 kills per set, 91 kills total, and a 92.2 serve receive percentage.
VS. ECU... The Pirates are 3-7 through 10 matches this season, defeating NC A&T, UNC and Temple. ECU is just 1-4 on the road, and averages 12.2 kills per set currently. Three Pirates have recorded over 100 digs this season, with Camryn Allen leading the way at 162. Setter Alisi Motu'apuaka runs the Pirate offense, with 234 assists on the year, averaging 6.32 per set. Davidson and ECU have not met since September of 2015, when the 'Cats pulled out a 3-2 victory in Belk Arena.
MS. 2,000... Through 89 matches played and 330 sets, senior setter Sydney Champaigne has dished 1,977 assists during her time as a Wildcat. Currently, Champaigne ranks among the Top-10 all-time in career assists, as the South Carolina native recently surpassed former teammate Mason Rooney to crack the program's Top-10 list.
BRADY'S RISE... Freshman Bella Brady has been Davidson's anchor this season, with the Florida native earning the Atlantic 10's Rookie of the Week honor twice already this year. Currently, the rookie is fourth in the league with 157 total digs and is second in the conference, averaging 4.62 digs per set. Brady has reached double figures in digs in all but one of the Wildcats' matches this season, and has dished 25 assists to date.
THE MARCH OF THE ROOKIES... In addition to Brady's solid start, the rest of Davidson's freshmen are also making an impact on the court. Joining Brady in the back row, Sophia Hritz had herself a breakout weekend, against Saint Louis last month, recording a new career-high 17 digs in match two against the Billikens. Texas native and fellow rookie Sola Omonije also had a strong second match against SLU, as she recorded a career-high eight kills and .263 attack percentage. To date, Omonije has 43 kills and 56.5 points combined this year, which is good for second most on the team. Freshman setter Jessie Doyal has also made herself a staple in Davidson's lineup, as the Georgia native has 116 assists and is averaging 3.52 per set.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING... Davidson's lone league win of the 2021 spring season, has come in a 3-2 result over VCU. Using all 12 active players, the Wildcats defeated the Rams for just the second time in program history and the first time since 1994. The 'Cats were solid all across the floor and had their most consistent outing of the season, as freshman Bella Brady recorded a match-high 30 digs, Sydney Champaigne and Jessie Doyal combined for 53 assists and Remi Lehnertz notched 18 kills. Brady, Doyal and Lehnertz all reached new career-highs in the contest, while Lehnertz recorded her second double-double in as many days, as the senior added 19 digs to the scoresheet. Doyal, the rookie out of Peachtree City, Georgia, also collected a new career-high in digs in the win, with 16.
