ELON, N.C. -- After rallying back-and-forth and forcing a fifth set, the Wildcats' comeback fell just short at Elon on Saturday, as the Phoenix took the 3-2 win over Davidson.
The 'Cats hit .155 on the day, marking their best offensive outing since defeating VCU back on February 27. Despite Davidson's efforts, the Phoenix torched the floor with a .189 attack percentage, including .423 and .261 in the third and fifth sets. Madeline Wynn and Hattie Rodriguez led Davidson's offensive brigade, as the two hit .357 and .333, respectively, while Rodriguez came away with 17 kills on the day. Senior setter Sydney Champaigne dished 22 assists in the match, and is now just one assist away from reaching the 2,000 career assists milestone.
Despite falling 25-19 in the first, Davidson turned the ship around in the second and pulled out a 25-18 victory. Out-swinging the Phoenix, the Wildcats relied on nine kills, with just three errors, and strong serving from Anela Davis and Jessie Doyal to settle the score at 1-1. While tied at 16 apiece in the second, Doyal led Davidson to a 7-0 scoring run from the service line, including two aces and one assist.
Elon jumped out to a commanding 7-1 lead in the third and never let the 'Cats back in, as the Phoenix cruised to a 25-16 third set win. However, Davidson bounced back again, coming up with a game-high 14 kills in the fourth and crawling back from a 23-19 deficit to win the set, 25-23. Down by four, Malia Kay went to the service line and worked with kills from Rodriguez and Sola Omonije, along with clutch blocking from Lauryn Albold to complete the comeback.
The Wildcats had four kills in the defining fifth set, but five attack errors proved to be costly, as Elon secured the match victory on a 15-7 fifth-set clincher.
Davidson will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for its final home game of the spring, with a 4 p.m. match up against ECU. Complete coverage for the contest can be found at http://davidsonwildcats.com/coverage.
