The Davidson swimming and diving teams' return to competition Friday resulted in a women's team victory and numerous individual first-place finishes against UNCW in Cannon Pool.
More than that, said coach John Young, was simply the opportunity to compete.
"It was great to see the Wildcats race, in person, against another team, after such a long year," he said. "I am so grateful for the continued focus of all our scholar-athletes, and especially those that positioned themselves to excel today."
The Davidson women posted a 165-133 victory over the Seahawks, while the Wildcat men lost 164-108.
For the Davidson women, Shelby Stanley and Siena Senn led the way with two wins apiece. Senn won the 200 and 500 freestyles in 1:49.48 and 4:53.82, respectively. Stanley placed first in the 100 and 200 butterfly events, posting times of 54.22 and 2:01.11. Other individual wins came from Sylvia Stewart-Bates in the 1,000 free (10:15.12), Hannah Gould in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.14), Abby Francis in the 200 IM (2:06.49) and Marissa Lassell in the 200 backstroke (2:00.29). The Wildcats also won the 50 medley relay, with Goodhead, Francis, Stanley and Martha Tripsa combining to swim 1:42.39. Goodhead, Tripsa, Senn and Stanley won the 4x100 free in 3:25.54.
"The women were outstanding," said Young. "We saw an assortment of performances that reset lifetime bests, broke pool records, and inspired imaginative thinking about what is possible in a month. For six women to account for eight individual event victories, for five more to be involved in top-3 scoring and for the 'Cats to win both relays, reflects an impressive team effort. It would be hard to be more proud."
In the men's competition, diver Daniel Valmassei led the Wildcats with wins in both the 1- and 3-meter events, with scores of 376.10 and 320.20, respectively.
Cael McLaren won the 200 IM in 1:57.60, and Jared Herr, Kilian Quinn, Tommy Cromie and Will Tabor won the 4x100 free relay (3:14.71).
"The Seahawks brought some firepower that was tough to answer in the team scoring, but our performances were exciting – especially with rest on the horizon," said Young. "Daniel again led the way with his performances on the boards."
