Field Hockey Rounds Out Homestand This Week
3/17/2021 11:54:00 AM | Field Hockey
The Davidson field hockey team will complete its six-game homestand at Belk Turf Field this week.
The Wildcats will host non-conference foe Central Michigan at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, then return to Atlantic 10 play Saturday with an 11 a.m. contest against Richmond. Davidson is 2-2 overall and 1-0 in league play after a 3-1 win over Saint Louis on March 13.
Nellie Turnage, Amy Worscheh and Izzy Moody scored against the Billikens, as seven Wildcats have scored this year, led by Worscheh and Lena Stiebing, who have two goals apiece.
"The team has been playing with great energy and continues to be extremely motivated to follow our game plan and play our Davidson style hockey," said coach Zoe Almquist. "I think this week will showcase two exciting matchups."
CMU enters with a 2-0 record after two wins over Bellarmine, and the Wildcats earned a 2-1 victory against the Chippewas in 2018, as Turnage scored a goal. CMU is coached by former Davidson assistant Catherine Ostoich.
"We are looking forward to rounding out our MAC opponents in a visit from Central Michigan on Thursday night," said Almquist. "They have shown they have some real attacking firepower, so we will be busy preparing to lockdown on defense this week."
Richmond, which defeated Davidson 4-0 in last year's regular season finale, is 0-1 after a season-opening 3-1 loss to rival VCU. The Spiders are only scheduled to play league opponents this spring.
"They are focusing all of their energy on A-10 play, so I know they will come to Davidson prepared and hungry," said Almquist. "Richmond stands out in my mind as the last game we played before the pandemic began, so I see the game as a real opportunity to mark our progress over the past wild year."
After playing their first six games at home, the Wildcats will play four of their last five on the road.
