DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Dayton Flyers jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, as the reigning Atlantic 10 Champions ousted Davidson 3-0 on Friday night inside Belk Arena.
Prior to the match up, the Wildcats honored their three graduating seniors, Remi Lehnertz, Ellie Crosley and Sydney Champaigne, who have all been four-year members of the Davidson volleyball program.
Dayton swung its way to the match victory, as the Flyers aced the 'Cats 10 times and hit .415 on the day to sweep all three sets 25-13, 25-6 and 25-16.
Davidson hung tough with Dayton through set one, thanks to early kills from Hattie Rodriguez and Lehnertz. Down 9-6, rookie Sola Omonije crushed a ball off a slide from Jessie Doyal and cut the deficit to two. However, from there, Dayton rattled off a five-point tear that the 'Cats would never come back from.
With four blocks from the Wildcats in set three, Davidson had established an early 3-1 lead in the final frame. Service miscues from Dayton, plus strong attacking from Anela Davis and Lehnertz allowed the 'Cats to push the score to 9-all. The close set would end there though, as the Flyers relied on two more aces and 15 kills to pull away with the third set and match win.
The Wildcats will have over a week off from competition, before returning to the court next weekend for a series of matches against Elon and ECU. Davidson will play the Phoenix on the road Saturday, before hosting the Pirates on Sunday from Belk Arena.
