'Cats Beat Richmond 2-0 For Second A-10 Win
3/11/2021 8:36:00 PM | Women's Soccer
After more than 77 minutes of scoreless play, Sophia Caruso and Alexandra Menard struck less than six minutes apart, and the Davidson women's soccer team topped Richmond 2-0 Thursday night at Alumni Stadium.
The Wildcats are now 4-1-1 and off to their second straight 2-0 Atlantic 10 Conference start. Davidson began the 2019 fall with two A-10 wins, and, ultimately, started league play 3-0-1.
"Really competitive, physical game tonight, and we're pleased with the performance and to win against a very strong Richmond team," said coach Adam Denton.
Caruso's goal came in the 78th minute after she controlled the ball right of the box and blasted a shot back to her left.
"It was a great first goal by Sophia, great strike from the edge of the box," said Denton.
But the Wildcats weren't done. Hailey Braemer's cross from the left corner was right to Menard, and her header into the net made it 2-0.
"It was a really good team goal, a couple of good passes, a great ball in by Hailey and Ali attacked the ball with a great header," said Denton.
Davidson held a 5-4 edge in shots, while Richmond had a 4-3 edge in corners.
The Wildcats came closest to scoring in the first half on a Gretchen Pearson header that hit the crossbar at the four-minute mark.
