MECHANICSVILLE, Va. – The Davidson women's cross country made their long-awaited return to the trails Friday at the Richmond Winter XC Invite at Pole Green Park.
The 'Cats dusted off their spikes and placed fourth as a team, led across the line by freshman Frances Whitworth. Whitworth gained five spots over the last mile to place ninth, stopping the clock in 18:25.8. Senior Caroline Willis entered the chute just behind her teammate in 18:32.1.
Sophomore Natalie Abernathy took 15th, junior Anna Kathryn Kilby 20th and sophomore Kelsey Troutman rounded out the team scoring 22nd-place performance.
"This was a good pack effort. We had a 36-second split, but we just need to be a bit more aggressive in mile two," said Director of Women's Cross Country/Track and Field Jen Straub.
George Mason won the small meet of just five teams with 50 points. James Madison (56) and Richmond (72) were ahead of Davidson (76), while George Washington rounded out the team scoring with 80.
"I was proud of the way we competed after not racing in a year! We will continue to work hard to be prepared for the A-10 Championships!"
Davidson returns to the trails Friday, Mar. 5 at the Atlantic 10 Championship, back at Pole Green Park.
