Q&A With Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete Alex Ross '21
2/17/2021 3:10:00 PM | Men's Golf, DAF
The unique opportunity to compete at a high level athletically while also engaging in a strong academic program ultimately led me to Davidson.
What made you choose Davidson over other opportunities?
I saw a unique opportunity in the Davidson golf program that other schools were not able to offer: outstanding facilities to work on my game at River Run Country Club, weather that would allow me to play year-round, an excellent and experienced coach in Tim Straub and a program whose results were trending in a positive direction.
If you were speaking to a recruit, what would you tell them about the highlights and challenges of being a scholar-athlete at Davidson?
Time management is something that was important in high school but is even more important as a scholar-athlete at Davidson. You need to allocate time for studying, practice, tournaments, workouts and other extracurriculars. Work smart and work hard; it pays off.
Philanthropic gifts from alumni, families and friends of Davidson Athletics help fund our 21 Division I programs at Davidson. What does that support mean to you and how do you believe support for your program has enhanced your experience and that of your teammates and program overall?
One of my most important goals in my four years at Davidson has been to leave the golf program better than I found it. With the support of our great alumni network and other friends of the program, I know that every member of the Davidson golf team has the tools and opportunities necessary to achieve these goals. From our experience at The Davidson Golf House at River Run Country Club to our team van to the other numerous benefits that our donors have afforded us, it is easy to appreciate and realize the value of such a great support system. I cannot overstate how important the support has been.
You've been a scholar-athlete at Davidson during unexpected and challenging circumstances in our country and around the world. How has that shaped who you are now versus who you were when you first came to campus, and how do you think it has affected the direction your career path is taking?
Although COVID-19 has kept us out of competition for an entire year, the lessons and values I have learned from playing college golf have been helpful in coping with such a difficult time period. COVID has reinforced how important it is to set long term goals and continue to work toward them, despite the circumstances. Perseverance, hard work and positivity are all characteristics I've developed at Davidson, all of which are important in dealing with these challenging circumstances.
What interests/paths do you plan to pursue after Davidson?
After Davidson, I intend to use my extra year of NCAA eligibility to compete for another program as a graduate transfer while earning a graduate business degree. Then, I will be pursuing a career in professional golf. I'm interested in all facets of business, and I know Davidson has prepared me for a career outside of golf, as well.
Favorite memory as a Wildcat?
Winning the A-10 Championship my freshman year. It was our program's first conference title in over 40 years!
