Field Hockey 'Excited' to Open Season Sunday
2/12/2021 8:04:00 PM | Field Hockey
The Davidson field hockey team will open the spring 2021 season Sunday when the Wildcats host Liberty at 10 a.m. at Carol Grotnes Belk Turf Field.
The Wildcats, led by second-year coach Zoe Almquist, return nine starters and have added 10 freshmen.
"We haven't played a game in 471 days, so more than any other single thing, we are excited for the opportunity to put on the Davidson jersey and play," said Almquist. "The team has worked tremendously hard on the field yes, but also at home training in their basements, studying in virtual classrooms, and isolating to protect themselves and our community from COVID. They have sacrificed so much and the gift at the end of the dedication and sacrifice is this season. Each day we get to be together is a gift. I don't think a single one of us takes that for granted!"
After not having a fall season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Davidson is slated to play an 11-game schedule this spring. Six of those contests will come against Atlantic 10 Conference foes, as the Wildcats will play Richmond, Saint Louis and VCU in home-and-home series.
"I'm looking forward to a unique A-10 set-up with home and home opportunities against our A-10 South opponents, and a chance to put our 10 freshmen and nine returning starters to the test," said Almquist. "This team is composed of amazing young women who have showed our staff their humanity, capacity for growth, and abundant resilience over the past 471 days, and we can't wait to put that on display for others, too."
Home sweet home
Beginning with the Flames, the Wildcats will play their first six contests on their home turf.
Appalachian State visits Feb. 27, followed by Longwood (March 6), Saint Louis (March 13), Central Michigan (March 18) and Richmond (March 20).
Davidson hits the road for the first time for a March 26 meeting with VCU.
Talented group returns
Leading the Wildcats are five experienced seniors: McGee Roman, Nellie Turnage, Valerie Hajek, Caitlyn Gund and Corynne Hammit. Hammit is back on the turf for the first time since the 2018 season after missing 2019 with an injury.
A midfielder/back, Roman led the team with 11 points last year, while Turnage always poses a threat with her speed.
Junior Julia Smith and sophomore Caroline Wack are the top non-seniors returning.
International flavor
Among the new Wildcats are three international players.
Midfielder Charlie Kabelac is from Germany, while goalkeeper Cato Roell and midfielder/forward Lena Stiebing are from the Netherlands. Kabelac attended high school in New York.
All three are expected to be in Sunday's starting lineup.
