Field Hockey Battles Ranked Liberty
2/14/2021 12:58:00 PM | Field Hockey
The Davidson field hockey team's return to action after more than a year was marked by a solid performance in a 3-1 loss to Liberty Sunday morning at Belk Turf Field.
Most significantly, the Wildcats held the Flames, a top-20 team, scoreless for a half, shut them out on defensive corners and had a chance to tie it in the final moments before allowing an empty-net goal.
"Today was a great day for Davidson field hockey," said Davidson coach Zoe Almquist. "Yes, the final score didn't reflect a win, but there were so many small wins along the way that it's less important. We also had the opportunity to get our jitters out, and I think we'll have some good lessons to take into our next competition. Most important — we got to play. And that opportunity was unbelievably special."
After Liberty struck twice in the third quarter, the Wildcats scored with 11 minutes to play when freshman Lena Stiebing angled a shot into the cage from the right side.
The score held at 2-1 until Liberty's Daniella Rhodes notched her second goal of the game, this time at the 15-second mark after the Wildcats pulled their goalkeeper.
Davidson earned a penalty corner with 1:18 to play, giving itself a chance to tie.
