AMHERST, Mass. -- Looking to extend their win streak to seven, the Davidson Wildcats' efforts were stalled by the University of Massachusetts' red-hot shooting this evening, falling to the Minutewomen 82-61 inside the Mullins Center.
UMass shot a season-high 61.8 percent from the floor, while the 'Cats made a season-low four three-pointers, on nine attempts.
For the ninth time this season, Davidson had at least three scorers reach double-figures, as Chloe Welch and Suzi-Rose Deegan led the way with 15 points apiece, while Adelaide Fuller followed with 10 points of her own.
The Wildcats struggled to find their rhythm from the jump, as the Minutewomen raced off to a 5-0 start in the first two minutes of play. Fuller got Davidson started, however, scoring four of the Wildcats' first seven points. Down 8-7 at the 6:13 mark, Welch sank a floater from inside the lane and gave Davidson its first lead of the day, 9-7.
Despite the brief lead, UMass pulled back ahead to a 21-11 advantage with one minute to go in the first. On the 'Cats' last possession of the frame, Cameron Tabor hit her second three-pointer of the day and cut the deficit to seven heading into the second.
Thanks to 54.5 percent shooting in the first half, the Minutewomen's offense exploded into an 8-2 run over the first three minutes of the second quarter, and eventually extended their lead to 20 points with 3:18 remaining. Kelly Fitzgerald helped smooth out Davidson's offensive efforts from there, and combined with Sarah Konstans, the duo allowed the 'Cats to go into the break on a 4-0 scoring run, while forcing three straight UMass turnovers before the half expired.
Going into the final 20 minutes of play, the Wildcats were looking at a 39-23 deficit, and remained scoreless in the first minute of the frame until Welch and Cassidy Gould combined for six straight Davidson points.
Deegan helped light up Davidson's third quarter efforts, tallying four points, and led the 'Cats to outscore the Minutewomen 18-17 in the third. The Wildcats converted 10 points off six UMass turnovers and pulled within 15 points at the end of the quarter, 56-41.
With an improved 53.8 percent shooting in the fourth, Davidson pulled as close as 13 points to UMass' lead, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit, as the Minutewomen ultimately pulled off the 82-61 win. The loss tonight moves Davidson to 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play and 6-4 overall.
The 'Cats will return to work on Sunday, Jan. 10 for a 12 p.m. tip off at Rhode Island on CBS Sports Network.
