Spring Senior Scholar-Athlete Spotlight: Brett Centracchio
6/12/2020 10:00:00 AM | Baseball
Name: Brett Centracchio
Sport: Baseball
What was your favorite class and why? Sports Economics with Dr. Smith because it combined my interest in the sports industry with my economics major
Where did you complete your studies this semester? At home in Alpharetta, Ga., and at the beach in Virginia Beach
Though it was cut short, what will you remember most about your senior season? Seeing the faces of my teammates waiting at home plate as I rounded third base after walking off Duke
If you had to choose, what was the defining moment of your athletic career? I think our team's Super Regional run in 2017 will be remembered forever. That was the most fun I've ever had on and off a baseball field.
What was your favorite trip you took as a team and why? Going to URI my sophomore year because my Grams was able to cook for a lot of the guys on our team, and she had a blast doing it. Everybody loved her lobster rolls and meatball subs.
What makes a Davidson scholar-athlete different? I think athletes at Davidson are more connected with the rest of the student body and administration than athletes at some other schools are. A lot of athletes have an impact on the campus outside of athletics.
You can invite any three people to dinner. Who is joining you? DaBaby, Dave Portnoy and Dick Cooke
Most memorable college moment outside of competition? There are too many to count, but here are some:
- The hotel lobby after winning a Regional
- "No Problem" by Chance the Rapper
- Whenever Commons had custom hash browns
- 0-100 lifts with Rowell
- Our Secret Santa parties
Did you have a pre-game superstition? Always drink an iced coffee from Starbucks. I always make sure to thank Matt Frey for making it to the field. At the end of pre-game defense I always flip the last ball behind my back to Charlie King.
What are you most proud of from your time as a Wildcat? Our on-field success in my four years has definitely been great, but the relationships I've developed with my teammates and coaches are what I'm most proud of. From guys three years older than me to guys three years younger than me, they're friendships I'll have forever.
What lessons from sports has helped you deal with the unusual situation of the spring semester? I think in sports, and baseball specifically, you have to learn how to deal with failure. The biggest thing has just been keeping a positive attitude through all this and seeing the good that has come out of it has helped.
Who do you want to thank for their support? My family, Coach Cooke and Coach Taylor for taking a chance on me, Coach Munger and Coach Link for their effort in helping me better my game, teammates older than us who set the standard and showed us the ropes, and teammates younger than us who have fit right into our program and embraced the culture
What's next for you? I'll be playing at UNC next year as a graduate transfer.
