Wildcat Isolation Journal: Adelaide Fuller
6/1/2020 12:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Checking in with rising Australian sophomore Adelaide Fuller of the Davidson women's basketball team ...
COVID-19 really shook things up these past few months. One minute we are finishing our season, and the next we are being encouraged to go home and isolate to prevent the spread. So it's fair to say that my daily routines changed pretty quickly too. All of a sudden, a trip to the supermarket, or a walk to get a takeaway coffee was the highlight of my day.
As an international student I had quite a few challenges to overcome throughout the semester, the largest being the 14-hour time difference. Luckily for me, my professors were super understanding, and recorded all the zoom lectures before posting them for me to view when I woke up in the morning. I would usually watch my classes and complete any work or meetings I had in the mornings, while everyone back in Davidson was still awake. The recorded lessons were a great tool particularly before finals, as reviewing the lessons were very helpful.
A typical day for me at the moment, now that the semester is done, includes getting up early around 7:00 a.m., and driving into the city to drop my sister off at school (restrictions in my state have recently allowed for schools to reopen to students) before grabbing a much needed coffee with my mum. After that, I head for a run along the Brisbane river, and complete the strength and conditioning program for the day provided by our strength coach. Luckily for me, my family has some lift equipment, however our programs are also tailored to accommodate for the different resources we each may have available. The local basketball court near us is my preferred place to shoot with my sister. Lucky for us, our driveway also has a basketball hoop, complete with a keyway and one wing of the 3-point line. The rest of the 3-point line is either on the grass or in the middle of the road so we make do.
Brisbane has been warm and relatively sunny since I have been home, meaning my spare time was usually spent out by the pool, or going on bike rides with my sisters after they finished school. I have also recently found myself to be quite the chef, and have been baking and cooking where I can. As restrictions ease in Queensland, I have been able to catch up with friends and visit the rest of my family as well, which has been great! While my sisters and I may be driving each other mad, the extra time I get to spend with my family is a silver lining to this madness.
I hope everyone is safe and well, and look forward to hopefully seeing you all soon.
