The Davidson women's basketball team had another successful campaign during the 2019-20 season, setting records, hitting milestones and again being a force in the Atlantic 10. Helping the players and the program reach their goals and potentials was assistant coach Lakevia Boykin, who just wrapped up her third season with the program under the guidance of head coach Gayle Fulks. DavidsonWildcats.com recently caught up with Boykin to see how she has been adjusting to the new "normal", while talking about this past season and what she is looking forward to the future of the program.
Kevi, thanks for the taking some time to answer a few questions! First off, how are you doing? I'm doing well. Happy to be safe and healthy! Also, fortunate that family and friends are safe and healthy as well.
How are things with you over the past month after the coronavirus has forced many of us to change our daily routines and what is your "new" normal like? It's most definitely been an adjustment working from home, but I've remained positive and made the best of it. My new normal involves A LOT of zoom and telephone calls! I've had to be very organized as far as planning/organizing my day to ensure my daily tasks are completed. Most would probably agree that it's very easy to become distracted or lose focus while working from home, so having a little discipline goes a long way. Going for long walks or runs in the afternoon/evening, reading, and cooking have become a staple in my daily routine. In the past I preferred working out in the morning, but now I use exercise as a time to decompress and relax. I look forward to wrapping up my days with getting a little fresh air.
What are some things you are missing right now due to the changes in our work schedules? Human Interaction! In past years during this time period we typically have post-season workouts with our players. So, it has most definitely been an adjustment not seeing/being around them and other members of the staff. I also miss being able to visit and spend time with family and friends. I absolutely love to travel and try new restaurants (I'm a foodie), so being confined to my home space has taken some getting used to!
Let's talk about this past season, what was your favorite moments from the season? I have a few! First would be our 14 three-point outburst against Western Carolina where we eclipsed 100 points, and set a program record. That was an exciting time, we had so much fun celebrating each other. Second, would be our trip to Gainesville to face the University of Florida. We came up short against the Gators, but had the opportunity to explore St. Augustine (one of the oldest cities in America) together. We viewed historic landmarks/buildings and also visited an alligator farm. I truly love and value the moments where we get to hang out and spend time together outside of basketball. Lastly, it would have to be our thrilling win at home against LaSalle in the first round of the A-10 tournament. The final stretch/end of that game was nothing short of epic!
What lessons were learned during the course of this past season that you saw by the team, and if any, by your own self? I learned that its marathon not a sprint! We started the month of January on a five-game winning streak, followed by losing five of our next six. The season is long, and I realized that you can't get too high or too low. Steadiness, and consistency is key!
You'll be entering your fourth season next year, how have you seen this program grow over the past three years? Wow, three years already? Time is flying! It honestly feels really good to think about the evolution of our program. In our first season, we doubled our win total; in our second season, we finished fourth in A-10 play; and this past season, we began conference play with a five-game winning streak (all program bests). I'm just so proud to be a part of this program! Our players have achieved unprecedented success on and off the court, which has been great to witness first-hand. Their maturation and watching some of them grow from freshmen to seniors and excellent young women has been a thrill. Overall, there has been a lot of 'firsts' these past three seasons. Each year we have continued to rise and set new standards, building an amazing culture of unity, integrity, and investment (UII)! I look forward to continuing the journey next season with the great group of people we have returning.
Looking ahead to the 2020-21 season, what do you expect from next year's team? To be cutting down nets in March.... Let's Gooooo!
