Checking in with rising senior Sarah Donovan of the Davidson women's basketball team ...
Dear Wildcat Family,
I hope that you are all staying safe and healthy during these crazy times. I am a rising senior forward for the Davidson women's basketball team. I am currently at home in London, ON, Canada, and I wanted to check in and let everyone know what I have been up to during this quarantine.
London has pretty strict guidelines regarding social distancing so I have spent most of my time at home. While I am unable to go out, I am thankful to be spending this time with my mom, dad, and younger brother, Michael. We play lots of cards and have finished multiple TV series. During the school year, I was very busy with basketball and classes, making it difficult to come home and see my family. Although my two sisters, Hannah and Laura, and older brother, Matthew, cannot be home right now, I have FaceTimed them every day, losing no family time.
As the weather gets nicer, I find myself spending more time outside in my backyard. When I first got home, the temperatures were below freezing and we were still getting snow (can you believe that?!). In fact, it was snowing at the beginning of May, which was uncharacteristic for this time of year. However, the weather is much nicer now and my pool is open. I spend a lot of time laying out in the sun, dreaming of Lake Campus back at Davidson.
I've taken up a few new hobbies during this quarantine. I've been doing a lot of gardening and cooking. I started a vegetable garden, growing tomatoes, peas, spinach, and various herbs. At the beginning of quarantine, I baked a lot of goodies for my family. Now, I cook dinner for my family almost every other day. I am a vegetarian, so I am not sure if the meat-eaters are enjoying all of the vegetarian dishes I am making. I painted a couple of times, though I am not much of a painter and should probably just stick to basketball!
All of the gyms and weight rooms are closed around here, so I have been forced to improvise. My family does not have an at-home gym, so I go on a lot of bike rides. My dad and I try to bike 10 miles every day, if not every other day. It is nice to spend time with him and also get out of the house. We borrowed dumbbells and work-out bands from family friends, so I have been able to do some light lifting. I try to do weights 4-5 times a week. In terms of basketball, I have an outdoor hoop that I shoot on. The sun, wind, and cold have been hard to adjust to, but I think I am finally getting the hang of it!
While I enjoy spending time with my family and relaxing at home, I still miss my Davidson family. I miss hanging out with my teammates, going to lake campus, playing pick-up on the weekends, and sitting at Commons for hours on end. Due to the closure of the Canada-US border, I am unsure of when I will see my teammates next. Despite the distance separating all of us, we have stayed connected via FaceTime, Zoom, and social media.
Although there are a lot of things that we cannot do during this quarantine, I am thankful to be with my family and in good health. This time has allowed me to relax (which I am NOT used to) and try new things. I can't wait until I can come back to Davidson and finish out my senior year. I hope that you all are staying safe, healthy, and positive!
Best,
Sarah Donovan
