Checking in with rising senior Saeeda Abdul-Aziz of the Davidson women's basketball team ...
Hey y'all! Sae here. I hope everyone is safe and healthy during these times and are trying to stay positive and active during this pandemic. I am here in Holly Springs, North Carolina. During this time, though the Raleigh area has moved into Phase 1, I am still home 95% of the time spending time with my family. This is the first time since my senior year of high school that I have been home for more than a couple weeks, nevertheless three months and counting. It has been fun being home spending time with my parents and my siblings. I have three younger siblings: a brother who just finished his freshman year of college, a brother who is nine years old, and a sister who is six years old. They keep me going for sure! I juggle my time being a student, an athlete, and a big sister at the same time. At times it is crazy and I just want some rest, but I am very thankful to spend this time with them because I usually don't get to see them as often.
When school was in session, I would wake up at 9 a.m. every morning. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday I would have my Egyptian history class from 9:30-10:20 in the morning, and then accounting class from 10:20-11:20. Once I was done with those classes, I would eat lunch, take a nap, and then do a body weight workout that was assigned by Coach Terrance (strength coach). When the workout was finished, I would either make a small smoothie or grab some fruit and go to my Sexual Revolutions History class in the afternoon. When I was officially done with class, I would try and get some homework done. That would take me about two-three hours. On Tuesday's and Thursday's my mornings were pretty relaxing, sometimes I would wake up a little later to get some extra rest and recovery. Once I woke up, I would try and answer any emails and do any more work that needed to be finished before my macroeconomics class. After class, I would workout with my brother or parents doing whatever body weight workout and running workout that Coach Terrance has assigned. My evenings have been spent working at Amazon Sort Center. I decided to get a job at Amazon during this time because I have been very antsy. I have a problem with staying still or being in one place for too long. Getting this job has given me the opportunity to get out of the house a little, get some of my pent up energy out, and all the while making a few bucks…not too bad eh?
Now that school is over, my day-to-day is pretty laid back. I have been waking up a little later than usual. I have been using this time to really get some rest and recover from the school year. I can say that since being home I have struggled a bit with my emotions either being too high or too low. Some days I have been really happy and upbeat, ready to conquer the day. Other days I wake up in a bad mood, grumpy, and sad that I cannot be with my friends and teammates. To help with that, I try to listen to music. Music has been a scapegoat for me when dealing with my emotions. It is really relieving for me to sit in my room, on the porch, or by the pool listening to music and clear my mind. Sometimes I fall asleep and other times I just end up belting out a few notes…even though I can't sing.
My favorite thing to do though has been calling my friends and family either via FaceTime or Zoom. I really enjoy face-to-face conversation and checking on people. Doing this has been amazing especially when I used to some of these people every single day, spending hours together. I have been able to really sit down and chat with family members that I have not talked with in a while. I have been able to forge deeper connections with my friends and even connect with old friends. I know these are unprecedented times and everything is so chaotic and unknown, but there is a lot of opportunity for us to get in contact with people and make the most out of our situation.
One thing that I truly miss are my Davidson Wildcat Fans and Family! I miss the basketball games, the cheering, my teammates, my coaches, and all of the BUCKETS that we got during the season!!! I know I will see you all again soon, but until then I want to thank all of the essential business workers, nurses, doctors, health care professionals (such as my mother), scientists (my aunt), and everyone else working through these times to make everything as safe as possible. They are all doing extraordinary work and we Thank You!
I hope you all stay safe, healthy, and positive!
