Checking in with rising sophomore Peyton Carter of the Davidson women's basketball team ...
Hello everybody! I hope you all have been doing well and staying safe during all these crazy times, but I just wanted to give you all an insight to what's been going on down here with me! I'm writing to you all from warm and sunny Jacksonville, Florida where we have been in self-quarantine for about 8 weeks. I am very thankful to able to spend alllllll of this quality time with my parents 24/7, and also happy that my brother and sister are safe where they are at. Contrary to what it may look like on the sidelines, I am actually a pretty quiet and introverted person that likes to be by myself, so being locked up inside hasn't bothered me too much yet. But we'll see how it goes throughout the rest of the summer.
For the most part I have spending my weeks relaxing, doing schoolwork, getting some exercise outside, watching some good shows on Netflix, and engaging in some intense games of Word with Friends with a few of my teammates. Like most people, having a daily routine has really helped me out, especially when I was dealing with classes and trying to stay organized. Most days I wake up and flex my extraordinary culinary skills by whipping up an excellent breakfast consisting of some Frosted Mini Wheats and maybe an orange. Next, I usually let my dog out and help direct him to his food and water bowls (he is old and his hair is getting a bit long so it's getting hard for him to see; I considered cutting it myself, but thought maybe it's best if I let the professionals do it). From there, it usually depends on the day of what I'll do next:
On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, I usually wake up a do the Teambuilder exercises that Coach Terrence puts on the app for us. I like to either do them in the morning or the evening, because exercising midday in the Florida sun, is the equivalent to asking to pass out from heat exhaustion. Then I drag my cousin, who lives right around the corner from me, out to do the sprints or run for that day. After I get home, I have some lunch, usually it's been Chipotle (surprised I'm not tired of it yet) and get started on my schoolwork for that day. It was a lot of getting ready for final exams, but they are done as is my freshman year!
Tuesdays and Thursdays are pretty much the same for me. I was able to meet up with a few of my friends/teammates from high school (keeping a safe distance of course) a few weeks back and we were able to get into a basketball gym and workout a bit, which was nice. After that I'd go back home and decide to either prepare some more for my finals (which are over now) or take a nap (taking a nap always wins). Nobody in my house is great at cooking, so most nights we go and pick something up from a restaurant for diner. From then on, its usually just a time to relax or watch some TV.
My weekends are pretty chill as well. On Saturdays, my cousin and I will usually go to the local park and shoot on the hoops or just hangout. I like to take Sundays as a 'do-nothing' kind of day, but my Mom and I do like to sometimes go for a walk along the beach since they've opened back up recently. But on Sunday nights, we do all come together to watch MJ and The Last Dance on ESPN. Good Stuff.
Although it is nice being home, I do miss a lot from Davidson. I miss my teammates, friends, being on campus, being around people (when I am feeling social, haha), late night Union meal swipes, fun times in the library, and much more. Luckily, my teammates and I have been able to stay in touch through FaceTime, Zoom, text, and of course Words with Friends. Hopefully things will start to get back to normal soon and we'll all be able to see each other in person again!
I hope everyone stays safe and thanks for reading!
