Checking in with rising senior guard Kelly Fitzgerald of the Davidson women's basketball team ...
COVID-19 has changed the world for all us recently. My new normal, like many of us, has consisted of DIY haircuts, a higher appreciation for my Netflix subscription, a multitude of "left-over nights," and an unshaken anxiety about where I am going to get my next roll of toilet paper. But while there are many features of this pandemic we can all relate to, COVID-19 has presented some unique daily challenges for student-athletes like myself pursuing our academic responsibilities and work outs.
My typical week day, starts by waking up at 8:30 a.m., eating breakfast, and heading next door to use my neighbor's at-home gym. Our team strength coach, Terrence, has provided us all with a lifting routine that we complete 4 times a week. I have been pretty lucky to have access to a rack of dumbbells and strengthening bands to keep up my strength. After lifting, I head back outside to do our conditioning. I typically complete the sprints on streets of my neighborhood but sometimes I switch it up and head to the public trails still open.
I would then hop online to attend my two daily classes and get some homework done in between each. My zoom classes usually all finished up around 3:30 p.m. I then head to my driveway to get up shots where I still have my measured out half-court lines and hoop thanks to my dad's work when I was in high school. Sometimes I can convince my sister or my parents to rebound and pass to me for an hour, otherwise if it's just me I spend a little extra time chasing down my ball rolling down the hill in our yard. After my basketball training, I spent the rest of the evening doing some more school work and hanging out with my family or connecting with friends and teammates on zoom.
Outside of school and basketball, the weather has allowed me to fill my time outdoors. I have really enjoyed biking around the horse farms here in Apex, NC and heading to the lake to paddle board, kayak, or swim. Additionally, I have connected with North Carolina's Center on Actual Innocence and have started some remote volunteer case work. I hope to get more involved with this after classes.
While COVID-19 has separated me from my teammates, coaches, and Davidson community, I am thankful for the extra moments I get to spend with my family and resources I have available during these difficult times. I hope you all are staying safe and healthy, I can't wait to be reconnected with everyone soon!
