4/28/2020 10:35:00 AM | Men's Tennis
Gavin McFarlin- Associate SID
Thirty-three seniors were on Davidson Wildcat rosters as this spring began, and though their 2020 seasons were abbreviated, their contributions to their respective teams, the overall athletics program and college itself make them worthy of recognition. Each Tuesday and Thursday, we will feature members of the class of 2020 as part of the Senior Spring Scholar-Athlete Spotlight.
Name: Matthew Rose
Sport you competed in: Men's Tennis
What is your major/minor: Psychology Major, Philosophy Minor
What was your favorite class and why: Acting 101, it was so much more different than any class I had ever taken at Davidson. It didn't even feel like class because it was so easy going and fun!
Where are you completing your studies this semester: Charlottesville, Va., in my living room!
Though it was cut short, what will you remember most about your senior season: The success my team had in our doubles, this year we had by far the best doubles record as a team in my four years.
If you had to choose, what was the defining moment of your athletic career: Easily my victory with partner Alex Loope over Virginia Tech! Coolest thing I've been a part of!
What was your favorite trip you took as a team and why: I'll say the trip to the Virginia Tech. We had an early morning match that day vs. St. Bonaventure and my partner and I did not perform well. We had about four hours before we played VT and then we played the best match of our lives.
What makes a Davidson scholar-athlete different: The general understanding that academics take priority at all times.
You can invite any three people to dinner, who is joining you: Dulé Hill, James Roday, and Timothy Omundson
Most memorable college moment outside of competition: Visiting Japan and the Philippines for a month, living with my roommate (a Filipino citizen) on a Davidson College grant
What lessons from sports has helped you deal with the unusual situation of the spring semester: Expect the unexpected, nothing ever turns out exactly how you want it! But you can't let that hold you down or stop you from trying again.
What are you most proud of from your time as a Wildcat: The relationships I formed with my teammates and classmates.
What's next for you: Who knows, we'll see!
