PINEHURST, N.C. – Battling through cold and windy conditions, Davidson's Alex Ross (+2 | 73) sits in a tie for fifth after round one of the 2020 Pinehurst Intercollegiate, while the 'Cats are just seven off the pace following a 298 Friday.
The three-day/54-hole event is being played on the Par 71, 6,937-yard Pinehurst No. 8 layout.
Coming off his fifth Top-5 in six starts this season, Ross made the turn in two-over 38 before playing his inward nine in even par.
Just two of the 81 competitors in the field finished at par or better.
As a team, the Wildcats signed for a 298 (+14) and are currently tied with Radford ahead of 10 other schools.
Clayton Tribus, Brian Garrett and Dean Naime each sit tied for 13th after carding rounds of 75 for Davidson, which won last year's event by 29 strokes over the Highlanders.
Sophomore Viraj Garewal (81) is also in the Wildcat lineup, while Cole Walter (79), Michael Freeman (81), Ethan Hall (82) and Will Simmons (+13) are competing as individuals.
Elon, led by individual leaders' Graham Hutchinson (71) and Max Ferrari (71), posted an opening-round 291 to grab the top spot on the team leaderboard.
Tomorrow's second round will begin at 8 a.m. off holes No. 1 and 10.
