DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Suzi-Rose Deegan has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-Conference, while junior Katie Turner earned a spot on the A-10 All-Third Team, as announced today by the league office.
Deegan becomes the first player since the Wildcats joined the A-10 to earn the top rookie honor and is the third overall in program history, joining Katie Hamilton and Laura Murray who were named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year in 2004-05 and 2010-11, respectively.
In addition, the freshman from Marmion, Australia was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team.
For Turner, it was her second-straight season being named to the league's third team after she earned a spot on the all-rookie team in 2017-18.
The duo helped Davidson win its first-round game at home in the A-10 Women's Basketball Championship Tuesday against La Salle. Turner dropped in 18 points on a career-high tying six three-pointers and Deegan scored 15 to go with eight rebounds and three blocks, as the Wildcats will take on VCU Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
"I am very happy that the conference coaches have recognized Katie and Rosie for their outstanding play this season," said head coach Gayle Fulks. "They are both ultimate competitors that have helped set the standard for toughness in our program. Katie and Rosie certainly wouldn't have had the individual success they did this season if it weren't for their teammates and the way our team competed each game."
Deegan became an instant contributor in her first year and won the A-10 Rookie of the Week seven times during the regular season. She paces the team in scoring (15.8 ppg), rebounding (7.7 rpg, 215 total), steals (29), made field goals (169) and free throws (68).
The shooting guard, who has played in 28 games and started 15 of those, led the team in scoring 15 times, 12 times in rebounding and eight times in both during the same game. Deegan has scored in double figures a team-best 21 times and registered six double-doubles. In addition, she twice has scored 30 or more points in a game, including a season-best 31 at Kansas City, and has six 20-point outings during the regular season.
Deegan was very impressive in league games, averaging 15.9 points and 8.6 rebounds, while hitting the 20-point mark four times and registering five double-doubles. She is currently in the top-five in the A-10 in: scoring (5th), rebounding (5th), offensive rebounds (71, 4th) and made field goals (5th).
"Rosie has been a matchup nightmare for opponents all season," said Fulks. "She is one of the most versatile, unorthodox, and dynamic players in the Atlantic 10. She has embraced playing multiple positions, finds ways to score all over the court, and has an ability to change the game with her tenacious rebounding."
A native of Reno, Nev., it has been a memorable third season for Turner. The junior, who has started all 30 games, became the 21st player in program history to reach 1,000 career points when she accomplished the milestone at home, Feb. 19. She currently sits in 18th place all-time (1,041), while also climbing in the record books in career assists (368, 3rd) and made three-pointers (196, 4th).
Turner is third on the team in scoring at 10.3 points per game and has team bests of 123 assists and 63 three-pointers, while shooting 36.8 percent from three. Both her assist and trey totals rank inside the Wildcat top-10 this year.
The point guard has reached the double-digit mark in points 12 times (53 for career), including three 20-point outings (eight for career). In the A-10 rankings, Turner is third in made threes, total assists and assists per game (4.1), and is fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9) and ninth in three-point percentage.
"Katie is one of the most complete point guards in the Atlantic 10," said Fulks. "She does an excellent job of running our offense, creating for others, and has an ability to score on all 3 levels. She also plays the game with an unmatched intensity that brings out the best in our team."
