Thirty-three seniors were on Davidson Wildcat rosters as this spring began, and though their 2020 seasons were abbreviated, their contributions to their respective teams, the overall athletics program and college itself make them worthy of recognition. Each Tuesday and Thursday, we will feature members of the class of 2020 as part of the Senior Spring Scholar-Athlete Spotlight.
Name: Michael Freeman
Sport you competed in: Men's Golf
What is your major/minor? Mathematics/Economics
What was your favorite class and why? Applied Math in Data Science because we got to work on fun projects involving sports.
Where are you completing your studies this semester? I am completing classes at home in Asheville, N.C.
Though it was cut short, what will you remember most about your senior season? Hanging out with the team and making memories with them.
If you had to choose, what was the defining
moment of your athletic career? The final round of A-10 Championship my sophomore year, where I helped the team win the tournament for our first conference title in 50 years and go onto the NCAA regional tournament.
What was your favorite trip you took as a team and why? My favorite team trip was the trip we took to Pinehurst to play CCNC, hosted by LD Simmons. It's always a lot of fun because the whole team is there and we get to play two great golf course and have friendly competition along the way. It is also a very productive weekend in terms of playing, practicing, and getting better.
What makes a Davidson scholar-athlete different? The academic responsibilities are much more rigorous. Also, the community within the athletes is very strong.
You can invite any three people to dinner, who is joining you? Tiger Woods, Dabo Swinney, and Steve Carell
Most memorable college moment outside of competition? Making of our aCATemy Awards video my freshman year.
Did you have a pre-game/match/meet superstition? No.
What lessons from sports has helped you deal with the unusual situation of the spring semester? One lesson from golf I take to deal with this current situation is that if you have bad hole or get a bad break then you have to remain level headed and stay focused in the moment and do what you set out to do.
What are you most proud of from your time as a Wildcat? Winning the A-10 Tournament.
Who do you want to thank for their support? Coach Straub, my parents, teammates all 4 years, and the donors for the golf team who make what we get to do possible.
What's next for you? Looking for a job.
