Ross and Garrett Share Individual Crown; 'Cats Second at Wexford

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Davidson's Alex Ross and Brian Garrett finished tied for first out of 90 competitors to share individual medalist honors, while the Wildcats came home second at the 2020 Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.
The two-day event was played on the 6,913-yard Par 72 Wexford Plantation layout.
"I am very proud of the team," said head coach Tim Straub. "They battled tough windy conditions today to move up the leaderboard."
"I'm especially proud of Brian and Alex, winning the tournament individually. Having two players tie for first is a great accomplishment. I am very excited for the rest of the spring."
Coming off a school-record 8-under 64, Ross (74-64-76), who entered just one off the pace, shot a final-round four-over to tie his teammate with a 54-hole total of 214 (-2).
Like Ross, Garrett was coming off a collegiate low, as the freshman fired a three-under 69 in his second round before signing for a 73 this afternoon. Garrett also bettered the field by three with 16 birdies over the three rounds.
Ross and Garrett were the only golfers to conclude the annual event under par. In addition, they're the first Wildcats to claim an individual crown since Clayton Tribus won at Pinehurst a year ago.
Davidson (295-286-300 = 881 | +17), which recorded a pair of Top-5 finishes in four fall events, posted the third lowest team score of the day to finish just three shots behind team-champion Augusta (+14).
High Point (+21) and Furman (+21) tied for third out of 18 teams, while Radford tallied the day's best round with a 297 to place fifth.
Viraj Garewal (74-78-71 = 223 | +7) was one of just three golfers to post a sub-par round Tuesday as the Wildcat sophomore climbed 30 spots up the leaderboard to finish tied for 21st.
Cole Walter (235 | 71st) and Dean Naime (238 | T-74th) were also in the Davidson lineup.

Davidson will compete in two tournaments over spring break beginning with the 2020 Fort Lauderdale Collegiate March 2 & 3. The 'Cats will conclude the week at the Pinehurst Collegiate March 6-9.
