HILTON HEAD, S.C. – In addition to Alex Ross tying the school record with an 8-under 64 in Monday's second round, teammate Brian Garrett posted a season-low 69 to pace Davidson on day one of the 2020 Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.
The two-day/54-hole event is being played on the 6,913-yard Par 72 Wexford Plantation layout.
A junior from Atlanta, Ga., Ross (74 | 64 = 138 | -6) opened with a 74 before tying former Wildcat Sam Echikson's mark that was set March 17, 2014 at the Seahawk Intercollegiate. The 2018 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and 2019 all-conference performer will enter tomorrow's final round just one shy of Augusta's Ben Van Wyk (70-67 = 137 | -7).
Garrett (72-69 = 141 | -3), who competed in three fall events, finished the day with a tournament-best 12 birdies and an eagle. The freshman birdied three of his first four holes this morning to grab the early individual lead.
After carding a 7-over 295 in the morning, Davidson bounced back with a 286 in round two and will enter the final day 11 back of team-leader Augusta (570 | -6) and nine behind second-place Furman (572 | -4).
Viraj Garewal (74-78 = 152 | T-51), Dean Naime (75-80 = 155 | T-69) and Cole Walter (80-75 = 155 | T-69) are also competing for the Wildcats in their spring opener.
