GENEVA, Ohio — Sarah Helen Shepherd and Siena Senn are Atlantic 10 champions.
The two Davidson swimmers earned that distinction Wednesday on the first full day of competition at the A-10 Championships at the SPIRE Institute.
The conference titles are their first and were part of a three-win day for Davidson, as men's diver Daniel Valmassei also won.
"What a night for the 'Cats," said Davidson coach John Young.
Senn touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle in the night's first event, swimming a personal-best of 4:49.72 after posting a time of 4:52.95 during prelims.
"Siena kicked us off with a tremendous, courageous 500," said Young. "She put herself out ahead of the field and held everyone off for a huge victory. Second-ever under-4:50 for the Davidson women. Just awesome."
Shepherd won the 200-yard individual medley and also set the school record — twice. She reclaimed the program's top spot during prelims with a time of 1:59.50 and earned the top seed for finals. Then she swam even faster in the night session (1:58.99), and freshman teammate Shelby Stanley followed in second with a time of 1:59.62, giving the Wildcats a 1-2 punch of 37 points.
"It was hard to imagine dialing the energy up higher after Siena's 500, but Sarah Helen and Shelby did it in the women's IM," said Young. "I am so proud of Sarah Helen — her progression in the event, from her first year until now, has been spectacular. She was just great tonight, first under 2:00 and first under 1:59. And Shelby powering home to grab the silver, and join her under 2:00, was the icing on the cake. It was remarkable."
Freshman Abby Francis was part of a three-way tie for fifth in the 50 free (23.44), and joined Julia Goodhead, Anna Linzell and Marisa Lassell in placing fourth in the 200 free relay (1:33.20).
Up Next
Action resumes at 10 a.m. Friday with another round of prelims, followed by 6:30 p.m. finals.
