DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team wrapped up a three-match week by falling to Elon 5-2 Sunday afternoon outside at the Davidson Tennis Courts.
The Wildcats fell to 3-4 on the season, while the Phoenix improved to 7-4.
"The team started off very strong, but Elon did not give up and they competed well," said head coach Susanne Depka. "We fought hard, but came up short in the end. I have to give Elon credit, they did extremely well and believed all the way till the last point. We are excited to get back out there though, and improve so we are ready for College of Charleston at the end of the week."
Davidson started out the match strong, taking two of the three doubles spots to grab the first team point. The No. 2 team of Alyssa Hahn and Elizabeth Truluck won their second straight with a 6-2 win. The duo of Nicole Krykanov and Franny Shea followed with their own 6-2 win to seal up the team point.
Each singles match was a back and forth battle, but Elon was able to prevail in five of the six positions to take the team win. In three of the matches at No. 1, 2 and 5, the Wildcats were forced to go to a third set after winning the first one in each of them, but dropped all three matches in the end.
The lone win came from Mira Gladstone at No. 4, where the sophomore pulled out a 7-5, 6-4 decision to run her record to 4-3.
Truluck (7-5, 3-6-, 3-6), Samantha Armas (6-4, 5-7, 4-6) and Josie Schaffer (6-1, 5-7, 4-6) each played a three-setter only to fall in all three of them.
Davidson next faces College of Charleston, Feb. 21, before travleing to Charleston, S.C., to take on Charleston Southern Sunday, Feb. 23 .
