Davidson Falls in Closing Seconds at Fordham, 47-46

BRONX, N.Y. — Davidson dropped a heart-breaker Thursday evening when Fordham hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 2.1 seconds to go to steal a 47-46 decision at Rose Gym in Atlantic 10 women's basketball play.
The Wildcats (13-11, 6-5 A-10) had a last-chance shot at winning it, but Adelaide Fuller's turnaround jumper off an in-bounds play hit the front of the rim as the final horn went off.
Fuller finished with a team-high 14 points and hauled in seven rebounds, while Chloe Welch finished with 11 points.
Senior Alley Welling, who netted eight points and had seven rebounds, had nailed a 15-foot jumper to give the Wildcats a 46-44 lead with 4.5 seconds left.
Fordham (16-8, 8-3 A-10) though called a quick timeout and off an in-bounds play near its bench, hit its only three-pointer of the game when Bre Cavanaugh swished in the game-winner with 2.1 seconds remaining. The Rams were just 1-of-16 from behind the arc on the night and the go-ahead three was just their second lead of the second half.
Cavanaugh scored a game-high 20 points, getting 18 in the second half, and Anna DeWolfe chipped in 10 points.
Davidson's defense stepped up and held the Rams to 32.3 percent shooting on the night and won the rebounding battled, 40-35.
A 16-4 run that spanned from the final four minutes of the second quarter into the third quarter turned an 18-15 deficit into a 31-22 lead for the 'Cats. It was capped off a by a Katie Turner three-ball with 6:21 on the clock.
The Rams chipped away and took a brief 34-33 lead to open the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats responded with a Cameron Tabor triple on their next possession and would eventually go up 44-37 with 4:59 to go in the game.
The first two quarters combined to see the teams trade the lead nine times with one tie. Fordham held a 14-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Davidson then overcame a sluggish start to the second quarter but ratting off a 9-2 spurt in the final four minutes to take a 24-20 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats return home this weekend for their annual Play4Kay game, hosting Duquesne Sunday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m.
