Blake Butler is joining the Davidson baseball staff as volunteer assistant coach, head coach Rucker Taylor announced Friday.
A former College of Charleston standout, Butler spent last season as a hitting coach at Frances Marion University.
"We're very excited to add Blake to our staff," said Taylor, who led the Wildcats to a 29-22 campaign in 2019. "He was an exceptional player, but what stands out the most is people always mention what kind of person he is before discussing his coaching ability or playing background. I believe our players are going to enjoy being around him, and he'll greatly help with their development."
Butler will work with infielders and outfielders and also be involved in hitting, baserunning and team offense and defense. He'll take the lead in scouting as well.
"I'm so blessed to be joining the Davidson program, campus and community," said Butler. "Coach Taylor and his staff have welcomed me with open arms, and I could not be more grateful for this opportunity."
A Greensboro native, Butler is a 2012 graduate of Southeast Guilford High. At Charleston, he was an everyday starter in the infield and helped the Cougars reach the NCAA Super Regionals in 2014 and the Regionals in 2015. In 2015, he hit .325 with 13 home runs, 63 RBI and a 19-game hit streak, earning Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year and CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Butler was drafted in the 15th round by the Cincinnati Reds in 2015 and played in the organization through 2017, including two seasons with the Daytona Tortugas of the Class A Advanced Florida State League. In his final pro game, he spent time at all nine positions, finishing on the mound.
Butler spent the 2018 season as a student assistant at Charleston, while he completed his marketing degree, then joined the FMU staff in August of 2018.
