‘Cats Stays Unbeaten, Pick Up a Pair of Wins on the Weekend

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team kept their unbeaten streak intact to start the season, scoring road wins of 6-1 and 5-2 against Fordham and Sacred Heart over the weekend, Jan. 25-26, in the Northeast.
Davidson is off to a 3-0 start, the first time since 1998 it has won its first three matches to start a season.
Saturday night the Wildcats netted their first Atlantic 10 win of the season, cruising past the Rams to improve to 3-0 in the all-time series. They opened the match by getting wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles from Parikh and Matthew Rose (6-1), and William Clark and Douglas Macintosh (6-3) for the first team point.
Parikh at No. 1 singles (5-0, retired) and Macintosh at No. 6 (6-3, 6-3) carried over their doubles wins with two more points in singles play.
Thomas Mason scored a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4, while Sam Kavarana came from a set down (0-6) to tally a pair of 6-3 wins in the next two sets at No. 3 for his first win of the season.
Capping off the evening was Axel Fries at No. 2 singles, splitting two tie-breakers in the first two sets (7-3, 4-7) to record a 10-7 super tie-breaker win to finish off the Wildcats final team point.
In Sunday's opening doubles matches, it was a battle at No. 1 and 2 positions to determine the doubles point. The Wildcats got a 6-2 win at No. 3 from the duo of Macintosh and Kavarana, They then pulled out a 10-7 tie-breaker at No. 2 from Axel Fries and Alexander Loope to secure the first team point.
The 'Cats nearly swept the doubles, falling 7-3 at No. 1 in a tie-breaker.
Behind singles wins from Macintosh, Kavarana, Mason and Yash Parikh, Davidson sealed up its third win of the season. Macintosh made it two wins in a row with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 6.
Kavarana pulled out a tough 6-4, 7-6(4) decision at No. 3 to give him two wins on the weekend, while Mason remained perfect on the season at 3-0 with a well-played 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4.
The final team point came from Parikh, who moved to 2-1 on the season at the top spot with a 6-3, 6-1 decision.
Davidson looks to keep the winning momentum going by returning home for a 5 p.m. match against USC Upstate, Feb. 4.
