FAIRFAX, Va. — Adelaide Fuller and Ally Welling combined for 29 points and Davidson weathered a sluggish fourth quarter to win its season-best fourth straight game with a 76-69 victory at George Mason Wednesday evening in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action inside EagleBank Arena.
For the second consecutive season, the Wildcats begin A-10 play at 4-0 and run their overall record to 11-6. The Patriots fell to 7-10 and 1-3 in league play.
Fuller finished with a team-high 18 points, the third game in a row with that point total, on 8-of-13 shooting and added five rebounds. Welling dropped in 11 on 5-of-10 from the floor and hauled in four rebounds with a block.
Two other 'Cats reached double figures as Katie Turner had 11 points, nine from behind the arc, and Cassidy Gould got 10. Leading scorer Suzi-Rose Deegan was held to nine points, but filled the box score with seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block.
Turner's third three-ball of the game gave Davidson a 68-51 lead at the 9:08 mark in the fourth quarter. It would not score again though until a Gould free throw with 1:31 to go, allowing the Patriots to close the gap at 69-63.
The defense tightened up for the Wildcats, pocketing back-to-back steals on Mason's next two possessions after Gould's free throw and they would hit five more free throws in the final 38 seconds to close out the victory.
George Mason was paced by a pair of 20-point games from Nicole Cardano-Hillary (22) and Marika Korpinen (20). Camarie Gatling added 12 points off the bench. The Patriots shot 50.9 percent for the game, but only 6-of-22 from behind the arc.
Despite going just 3-for-11 from the floor in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats closed out at 43.1 percent for the game and hit eight three-pointers to go with 12 free throws.
The opening quarter of the game featured nine lead changes, ending with Mason holding the final lead at 18-17.
It lasted just 30 seconds as the Wildcats opened up the second quarter with a Chloe Welch layup and they were off and running. The 'Cats rattled off an 11-0 spurt to go up 28-18 with 7:14 on the clock. They maintained momentum, closing the quarter with five points from Turner and Fuller's 11th and 12th points of the half for a 39-28 lead going into halftime.
Davidson returns home to finish out the week with a Saturday contest against George Washington, Jan. 18, at 1 p.m.
