W. Tennis Opened Fall Season At Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team got their Fall season underway by playing in the Queens Invite last weekend, Sept. 19-22, on the campus of Queens in Charlotte. The Wildcats faced players from Queens, Wingate and Wofford, playing both doubles and singles over the weekend.
In singles play vs. Wingate, seven 'Cats scored wins led by senior Alexandra Abele at No. 2, who played out a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6(4) decision. The duo of Elizabeth Truluck and Mira Gladstone scored wins of 6-4, 6-0 and 7-5, 6-3, at No. 3 and 4 positions, respectively. Alyssa Hahn rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 6. The freshmen trio of Josie Schaffer (No. 7, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4), Emma Heiderscheit (No. 8, 6-3, 7-5) and Franny Shea (No. 9, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1) each netted wins in their first collegiate Fall action.
The doubles team of Gladstone and Shea nailed down a 6-3 triumph at No. 4.
Facing Wofford, the doubles team of Hahn and Truluck sealed up a 6-4 win at No. 3 as the lone 'Cats to pick up a doubles victory. Davidson had another great showing in singles play against the Terriers, getting singles wins at six of the eight slots. Truluck had a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2, while Samantha Armas earned a 6-2, 7-6(7) decision at No. 3. Hahn and Heiderscheit rolled in straight sets at No. 5 and 7, respectively, with wins of 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-4. The duo of Gladstone and Shea needed an extra set, but took care of business in securing wins of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(4) at No. 6 and 8 positions.
Rounding out the weekend was singles and doubles matches against host Queens. The Wildcats had a strong showing in doubles play, winning all four spots and giving up only a combined five games in all. Armas and Abele earned a 6-1 win at No. 1, while Gladstone and Truluck blanked their opponent in a 6-0 showing. At No. 3, Shea and Hahn secured a 6-4 win, and Heiderscheit along with Krykanov picked up a 6-0 win at No. 4.
Five 'Cats earned singles wins vs. the Royals. Armas pulled out a back-and-forth match, going to a pair of tie breakers (7-6(8), 6-7(7)) before nailing down a 6-2 win to earn the match victory. Gladstone gave up just three games in a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 5, while Krykanov cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win. The freshmen tandem of Heiderscheit blanked her opponent in a 6-0, 6-0 match and Shea allowed just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 dominating victory at No. 7.
Davidson returns to the courts this weekend, Sept. 27-29, when it travels to Wilmington, N.C., to participate in the UNC Wilmington Dual Event.
