LORETTO, Pa. — The Davidson field hockey team led early and late Friday afternoon, but came up short 3-2 in overtime at Saint Francis (Pa.) in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both teams.
Davidson's Valerie Hajek and Julia Smith scored their second goals of the season, and in the last three contests, to give the Wildcats a chance as Davidson keeper Sarah Zeszotarski had five saves.
Hajek scored 1:23 into the game, off a corner, and the Wildcats kept that 1-0 lead until the 23rd minute when the Red Flash answered with a goal by Kellie Drugotch.
Smith's goal in the 53rd minute again pushed the Wildcats ahead, but the Red Flash answered with a goal from Taylor Nesmith 1:44 later, forcing overtime.
SFU's Sharon Kereke scored in the third minute of the extra session to end it.
Davidson finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal and an 8-7 advantage in penalty corners.
