LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — McGee Roman's goal late in regulation forced overtime at Lock Haven Sunday, and coach Zoe Almquist said her Davidson field hockey team played "the best we have played to date" in a 2-1 loss that ended with a shootout.
It was Davidson's second straight overtime game, following Friday's at St. Francis, and marked the first time Davidson had entered a shootout since current junior Nellie Turnage's score pushed the 'Cats to a 1-0 victory at LIU-Brooklyn in the final match of 2017.
"I am tremendously proud of the game we put together today," said Almquist. "I am so proud of the way we battled — after their goal in the first, through regulation, both overtimes and the shootout. It's a heartbreaker to drop both games this weekend in extra frames, but I'm so encouraged that we are getting better every single game."
Lock Haven led 1-0 after Amy Stevens scored in the 12th minute, but with 3:02 left in the fourth period, Davidson pulled keeper Sarah Zeszotarski in an effort to create some late offense. The move paid off when the Wildcats earned a corner and Roman scored off an assist from Julia Smith, tying the game at 1-1 at the 58:31 mark.
"We executed on that one and only corner," said Almquist. "I couldn't write the playbook any better than that."
Zeszotarski finished with 12 saves, including against multiple point-blank shots in the extra sessions, and kept the Wildcats within striking distance through 60 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.
"Sarah, in particular, stood on her head for us in cage today," said Almquist. "That is what senior leadership is all about. She personified the heart and effort that we keep talking about as pillars of our Davidson field hockey culture. She is blazing that trail forward for us, and I am so grateful for the game she played back there today."
Lock Haven's Jazmin Palma was the lone player for either team to convert in the shootout.
