FARMVILLE, Va. — Two goals near the 45-minute mark of play proved to be the difference for the Davidson field hockey team Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats secured a 3-2 win over Merrimack in a game held at Longwood.
Davidson's first win of the season is also the first for new head coach Zoe Almquist.
"I'm proud we have one in the win column after today," said Almquist. "We really showed grit and resiliency through the entire 60 minutes."
Julia Smith's first career goal gave Davidson a 1-0 lead late in the first period. After Merrimack's Catherine Henaire tied it just before the half, the Wildcats responded with two goals in a span of 33 seconds around the third-quarter break.
Izzy Moody scored her first career goal with 22 seconds left in the third period, and Valerie Hajek gave the Wildcats a 3-1 lead with a score 11 seconds into the fourth. It's also the first Davidson goal for Hajek, who scored once as a freshman at Towson.
Henaire cut it to 3-2 with seven minutes left, but the Wildcats held on.
"Today's game marks another step in the right direction for this program," said Almquist. "We were able to capitalize on scoring opportunities, and made strides defensively, too. It was awesome to have Izzy, Valerie, and Julia all score their first goals."
