DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team drew Drexel in the first round of the 2019 Preseason Women's NIT, as the bracket was released today by the organization.
The Wildcats will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., where it will take on the Dragons Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. With a win, the 'Cats would face the winner of DePaul and Miami (Ohio) in the second round, Nov. 10-11, with the site and time to be determined.
"I'm excited about the release of the WNIT bracket and the opportunity to compete for a championship so early in the season," said head coach Gayle Coats Fulks, who will be entering her third season. "With us returning four starters from last season, we wanted to enter this tournament to give our team the exposure to high-level programs early in the season, and playing Drexel in the first round is going to do exactly that. They are a very experienced team and are coming off a great year that will really challenge us."
Teams that lose in the first or second rounds will play consolation games. The bracket will be re-drawn with regard to matchups based on considerations such as geography of teams involved, who can/cannot host and recent history of teams. The consolation bracket will be released after all of the first round games are completed.
Coming off its best finish in the Atlantic 10 since joining the league in 2014-15 with a fourth-place finish, Davidson has faced Drexel just once in its 40-year history. The two schools met during the 2000-01 season at the Big Apple Classic hosted by Manhattan in Riverdale, N.Y., with the Dragons earning an 82-73 win.
Drexel is coming off a 24-9 (14-4 CAA) season this past year and earned its 10th postseason bid with a trip to the WNIT for a fifth consecutive season. The Dragons, who led the nation in scoring defense (50.5 ppg), are paced by returning Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year Bailey Greenberg (17.2 ppg- led CAA & 7.2 rpg).
Davidson is coming off a 17-win campaign this past season and went a program-best 10-6 in A-10 play. It also won the program's first A-10 tournament game, taking a first-round win at home against St. Bonaventure. The Wildcats will return four of its five starters and 10 letter winners in all, including A-10 Most Improved Player Sarah Donovan (12.9 ppg, 9.2 rpg- led A-10) and all-third team pick Katie Turner (12.2 ppg, career-high 138 assists- second-most in A-10).
The Preseason WNIT features a three-game guarantee for all teams. All games are hosted by participating schools, with the championship game televised on CBS Sports Network.
