ORLANDO, Fla. – Despite three individuals placing inside the Top-10, the defending champs were unable to rally past VCU late, as Davidson finished the 2019 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship two off the pace Sunday.
The three-day/54-hole event was played on the Par 72, 7,024-yard Grand Cypress Golf Club layout.
Trailing by one entering the final round, Davidson (+5 | 869) fired a 6-under 282 this afternoon, but was edged by the Rams (+3 | 867), who carded a tournament-low 281 (-7).
Ranked 78th in the latest Golfstat National Rankings, the Wildcats led by two at the turn before VCU played its inward nine 8-under as a team to claim the title.
"I am so proud of our team, they played amazing golf today," said Davidson head coach Tim Straub, who was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season. "They never gave up and fought right to the end. To shoot six under on this course the last day was a great performance. Hats off to VCU, they saved their best golf of the year for the conference tournament."
Hoke Carlton (212 | -4), who played the weekend in 8-under par thanks to a pair of 68s, led Davidson on the individual leaderboard finishing tied for fourth. Jack Lang (214 | -2), the leader after the first and second rounds, came home tied for seventh, while Alex Ross (220 | +4), last year's Rookie of the Year, placed tied for 10th.
"I can't say enough about our seniors, Jack Lang and Hoke Carlton. They've been not just unbelievable players, but the best team players a coach could ever imagine. They are going to truly be missed."
Freshmen Viraj Garewal (225 | T-25th) and Clayton Tribus (230 | T-33rd) climbed the leaderboard with their best rounds of the tournament, 73 and 71, respectively.
George Washington's Logan Lowe (-6), who aced the Par 3 fourth hole today, captured individual medalist. Lowe and Lang will represent the Atlantic 10 at the 2019 NCAA Regional Championships as individual competitors, while VCU receives the league's automatic bid.
Lang will advance via his national ranking.
In addition to the Atlantic 10 handing out hardware to the winning team and individual, the league announced its postseason awards at the conclusion of Sunday's final round.
