DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team wrapped up its record-breaking Atlantic 10 season and postseason Women's Basketball Invite (WBI) bid Thursday evening by hosting its inaugural awards ceremony that was open to the public with fans, family and friends in attendance.
The Wildcats honored their three seniors Justine Lyon, Kianna Speight and Kyla Roland, as well as handed out team and conference awards. Lyon was honored with the team's Wildcat Award, Speight earned the Hustle Award and Sarah Donovan was named the team's MVP. In addition, Donovan and Lyon were recognized for their A-10 awards of Most Improved Player and Sixth Woman of the Year along with Second Team All-Conference and Third Team All-Conference honors. Katie Turner was also recognized for her A-10 Third Team All-Conference honor.
Davidson (17-15) had its best season in the A-10 since joining the league with a 10-6 mark to finish in a tie for fourth place and won its first-ever game in the league championship with a home victory against St. Bonaventure in the first round. The Wildcats' 17 wins were the most since the 2012-13 season, with 10 of those wins coming at home. They led the A-10 in scoring (66.0 per game), turnover margin (+2.8) and offensive rebounds (13.9 per game). The 'Cats invite into the WBI was its fourth postseason appearance in program history.
Other stellar team highlights included setting a program single-season record for made and attempted threes by going 216-for-713 to break the previous record of 180-of-542 set in 2007-08, had four players average in double figures in points for the first time since 2001-02 and won the program's 450th win with a first-round victory in the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship.
Lyon finished her career with her name scattered throughout the record books, including ranking fifth all-time in points (1,442) and made free throws (293). She was named the A-10 Most Improved Player in 2016-17 and was honored with the team's MVP award that year.
Fellow senior Speight had a career senior season, setting several personal best records on offense and defense. Her 71 made three-pointers this season were third-most in a single season, while her 137 total made ranked eighth on the all-time record list. Speight led the team with 50 steals, which were good for sixth-most in the A-10.
Sophomores Sarah Donovan and Katie Turner followed up their strong freshmen seasons with outstanding second years. Donovan's A-10 Most Improved Player award was well deserved after she averaged 12.9 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, while starting all 32 games. Her rebounding average topped the A-10 as did her offensive rebounding (3.7 per game). Donovan's 293 total rebounds were the second-most in a Wildcat single season and the 170 made field goals on the year were good for ninth place. She also recorded a career-best 11 double-doubles, the most since Mackenzie Latt tallied the same amount in 2014-15.
Turner averaged 12.2 points per game and dished out a career-high 138 assists (4.3 per game), the second-most in the A-10. The assists also ranked fifth on the 'Cats' single season list, while her 58 made three-pointers were good for 10th after she set the record a year ago with 75. Turner led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.0.
