It's another two weeks before Atlantic 10 baseball gets into full swing, but Davidson and Richmond will get the conference season started with a weekend series at Wilson Field, beginning Friday evening (6 p.m.).
Richmond leads the all-time series 28-19. Davidson won two of three games in Richmond last season, and the teams split two games in the A-10 Tournament. This series is the fourth the teams will play since Davidson joined the league in 2015.
Both teams will be looking to bounce back after losses in their most recent outings. Davidson (6-4) fell 24-2 at No. 1 Vanderbilt Tuesday, while Richmond (8-2) lost 6-3 to Rider in its series finale last Sunday.
Scouting the Spiders
Richmond, 32-24 last season, already has a notable win on its resume this year. The Spiders won 7-1 at then-No. 17 Georgia Tech on Feb. 16.
Three Spiders have been honored by the A-10 this season. Infielder Tyler Plantier and outfielder D.J. Lee earned A-10 Player of the Week honors, while infielder Daniel Little was Rookie of the Week.
Reliever Layne Looney was a first-team A-10 team member last season while Justin Cook was a second team third baseman. Outfielder/pitcher Tim Miller was a member of the A-10 All-Rookie team.
Fontes leads the A-10
Davidson designated hitter Ruben Fontes is atop the A-10 rankings in home runs with four. In fact, he's the league's only player with at least three. He hit three in a four-game span last week.
He also ranks second in the league with two triples and is sixth with 10 RBI.
Elsewhere in the league rankings, Wildcat outfielder Alex Mardiney is second in walks (10), and pitcher Josh Hudson is among the A-10 leaders in a number of categories, including strikeouts (second, 20) and ERA (fourth, 1.20).
.300 or better
Three Wildcats are hitting at least .300.
Catcher Zach Nussbaum leads the team with a .348 average, earning eight hits in 23 at-bats.
Infielder Eric Jones is hitting .342 and leads the team with 13 hits, and second baseman Matt Frey is hitting an even .300 with a team-best three doubles.
