DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team learned Monday night that their season will continue, as the Wildcats earned an invite into the Women's Basketball Invitational.
Coming off their best finish (tie for 4th place, 10-6) since joining the Atlantic 10, the 'Cats will host Conference USA foe Marshall (16-14) in the first round Wednesday, March 20, at 7 p.m. inside John M. Belk Arena. Should they win, the Wildcats would play the winner of UNC Asheville/Appalachian State in the second round on the road.
"Our entire program is thrilled for the opportunity to play in the postseason on a national stage," said second-year head coach Gayle Coats Fulks. "We are hungry and motivated to keep playing and to chase a championship together. In addition, I am confident this experience will help us continue to take steps forward and help us in achieving our future goals as a program."
This is Davidson's fourth all-time postseason appearance and the first in the WBI. The other three appearances were in the Women's National Invitational (WNIT).
The 2012-13 season was Davidson's last postseason appearance, with an automatic bid into the WNIT after finishing second in the Southern Conference. The Wildcats reached the second round that year for the first time with a win at Old Dominion before falling to cross-county rival Charlotte. The Wildcats also made trips to the WNIT in 2007-08 (at-large) and 2011-12 (automatic).
The Wildcats will take a 17-14 overall record into its first-round matchup against Marshall. The 'Cats are coming off reaching the quarterfinals for the first time in the A-10 Championship two weeks ago. They defeated St. Bonaventure, 74-49, in the first round at home, before falling to Dayton in the quarters on the campus of Duquesne in Pittsburgh, Pa., where the rest of the championship finished out.
