BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Davidson men's tennis team earned its first Atlantic 10 win on the season when it scored a 7-0 decision against St. Bonaventure before falling to Virginia Tech in the nightcap of a doubleheader, 4-0, Saturday on the campus of the Hokies.
Davidson moved to 3-2 on the year, with the Bonnies falling to 2-5 (0-1 A-10) and the Hokies improving to 6-2 after also defeating SBU earlier in the day.
The first match of the day saw the Wildcats open with a 1-0 lead after wins of 6-2 and 6-4 at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Douglas MacIntosh and Camden Mazzoni won their team-best third match at No. 2.
Singles play saw the 'Cats sweep all six positions, with five of them going in straight sets. Axel Fries tallied a 6-4, 6-2 win at the top spot followed by Yash Parikh taking a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 2. Fries would later suffer his first defeat of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat to No. 55 Jason Kros of Virginia Tech at the top spot.
Camden Mazzoni tied Parikh with a 4-0 record on the year after a 6-3, 6-4 decision, while Douglas MacIntosh cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 for his second win of the year.
The freshmen pair of Sam Kavarana (No. 3, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (8)) and Brooks Green (7-5, 6-3) capped off the morning with wins at No. 3 and 4 positions for their third victory each.
In the second match of the day, Virginia Tech took the doubles point after 6-2 and 6-1 wins at the top two spots. The Hokies would then go on and earn victories at No. 1, 5 and 6 singles positions to seal up the team win.
The doubles team of Matthew Rose and Alexander Loope scored the lone win vs. the Hokies with a 6-1 decision at No. 3 doubles to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Davidson next will host Gardner-Webb for a match on Feb. 12.
