Sarah Helen Shepherd set another school record — or rather, broke her own record twice — and the Davidson men had five swimmers in the top 10 of the 200-yard freestyle to lead the Wildcats on the third day of the Atlantic 10 Championships in Ohio.
Shepherd set the 400 individual medley record at last year's conference meet, and she shattered that mark by more than three seconds in Friday's prelims. Then she chopped four more seconds with a finals time of 4:17.47, which earned her third place.
"Sarah Helen continues her hot swimming, shattering the college record in that 400 IM," said head coach John Young. "And she followed that up with a strong contribution to the 400 medley relay as our breaststroker."
Led by Thacher Scannell's second-place finish, the Davidson men earned 65 points in the 200 free. Scannell's time of 1:38.20 was followed by Walter Dauksher, who took third (1:38.29). Brian Hynes placed sixth (1:39.52) and Ian Hentenaar was seventh (1:40.34). Matt Bode was in the B final and took 10th (1:39.62).
"Four Wildcats earning spots in the A final was extraordinary," said Young. "And they got the job done, led by Thacher and Walt finishing on the podium."
Crossan Cooper placed fourth in the 400 IM (3:55.02), while Mitchell Stanek took sixth (3:56.93) and Charlie Walsh was 14th (4:02.86).
In the 100 fly, Isabella McElrath earned key points by placing eighth (56.04), while the Davidson men had Alex Strasser (8th, 49.00) and Will Tabor (12th, 49.45) swimming in the night session.
Tabor placed 14th in the 100 breast (56.62), and a trio of Wildcat women swam in the B finals of that event. Helen Duffy placed 13th (1:05.08), while Audrey Grammel (1:05.12) and Emily Bassett (1:05.22) were 14th and 16th, respectively.
Hope Carpenter's 11th-place finish led a trio of Wildcats in the women's 100 back (56.19). Julia Goodhead (56.99) and Alexis LeMone (57.22) finished 14th and 15th. And Frances Resweber took 14th in the 200 free (1:51.72).
In the 400 medley relay, the Davidson men (Kevin Andrews, Cooper, Strasser, Scannell) were sixth in 3:20.30, while the quartet of Carpenter, Shepherd, McElrath and Maggie Farrell took eigth (3:46.93).
After three days, the Davidson men are fifth in the team standings. The Davidson women are sixth.
"Both teams are in tight races for position, and put themselves there by having outstanding mornings," said Young. "Overall, this was a really solid day. But both teams still have lots of opportunities to take advantage of tomorrow."
