Sarah Helen Shepherd set the 200-yard individual medley program record – twice – to highlight Thursday's performances at the Atlantic 10 Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Shepherd, a sophomore from Chapel Hill, trimmed more than a second off the record during prelims with a time of 2:01.98. Then she cut more time with a fifth-place finals finish, posting a time of 2:01.62.
"Sarah Helen is a superstar," said head coach John Young. "She had two spectacular swims today, really complete IMs, that each demonstrated exceptional poise and execution. That record is the night's individual highlight."
Isabella McElrath set personal marks twice in the 200 IM, with her time of 2:05.10 good enough for 15th in the night session.
Maggie Farrell set her 50 freestyle personal record twice in the morning – first with a time of 23.50 that tied for eighth and then 23.45 in a swim-off – before swimming 23.51 in finals and finishing eighth.
"I'm so proud of Maggie," said Young. "She earned her first A-Final in the 50 with an epic swim-off victory. It was a great moment for Davidson."
With a personal-best 4:55.25 (by almost three seconds) in the 500 free, Siena Senn climbed into second place on the program's all-time list. She placed 12th in the finals.
The Davidson men had three swimmers in the 500 free finals, led by freshman Thacher Scannell, who placed second with a personal-best 4.26.06. Crossan Cooper was sixth (personal-best 4:28.13) and Walter Dauksher was seventh (4:30.71).
"The event highlight was the 500," said Young. "Siena's big best time to get us going was so much fun. And the men were great. Thacher swam a smart race to earn second from the outside lane and log another big best time. Crossan was tough on the other side of the pool, grabbing his lifetime best. Together with Walt, those points keep us in striking distance of the competition for tomorrow."
After posting a personal-best time in prelims, Kilian Quinn swam to 16th in the 50 free (21.16).
In the 200 free relay, the day's only relay, the Davidson men (Dauksher, Matt Bode, Scannell, Quinn) placed seventh with a time of 1:22.74. The Davidson women's quartet of Julia Goodhead, Hope Carpenter, Anna Linzell and Farrell was ninth (1:35.13).
"The women are in a great place right now — we're in a tight team race that should be easy to get excited about," said Young. "On the men's side, we're looking up at a lot of teams that I think we can catch, but we're going to need a strong morning to do it."
