Only a handful of events were on the docket on the first day of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships, but it didn't take the Davidson Wildcats long to make a splash in Ohio.
The men's 800-yard freestyle relay team set a school record Wednesday with a time of 6:32.13.
The quartet of Thacher Scannell, Brian Hynes, Crossan Cooper and Walter Dauksher finished second overall and broke a Davidson record set in 2014.
"The men were outstanding in their second-place effort," said coach John Young. "They set a new Davidson record by two seconds and improved on last year's very good fifth-place relay. And even in their great effort, we saw things that can be improved. A very good swim for Davidson."
The top finish for the Davidson women Wednesday also came in the 800 free relay, as Maggie Farrell, Siena Senn, Sarah Helen Shepherd and Frances Resweber finished fifth (7:24.24)
"The women improved 14 seconds from last year's swim, which is really an astounding drop for one year, to finish fifth," said Young.
Thursday marks the first full day of action at the SPIRE Institute. Swimming resumes at 10 a.m. with preliminaries and finals to follow at 6:30 p.m.
Thursday's events include the 50 and 500 freestyles, the 200 individual medley and the 200 free relay.
