All the training has concluded and the anticipation is giving way to competition.
It's time for the Atlantic 10 Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.
That means the most intense competition of the season — and probably the most fun — is at hand.
The Davidson men's and women's teams will compete in the championships Wednesday through Saturday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
"Our overarching goal is always to see the team represent Davidson proudly," said head coach John Young. "I've found the A-10 meet to be a great measuring stick for where we are as a program. Even after graduating an impactful class, I'm hopeful that we'll see evidence of advancement from last season."
The Wildcats will begin competition Wednesday at 5 p.m., when the swimming portion of the meet commences with two relay events (200 medley, 800 freestyle). Beginning Thursday, there will be preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m. each day. A top 16 finish in prelims is needed to qualify for the A and B finals.
"For the Wildcats, the opportunity is to make progress, make memories, and make their mark," said Young. "None of them needs to be better than their best to do all those things, but I hope they are excited to explore what their best looks like this weekend."
Wildcats swimmers will tell you the conference meet is unlike anything else on the schedule. For four days, emotions will run high and so will the decibel level.
"The atmosphere is absolutely crazy," said Maggie Farrell. "There's so much cheering that it almost feels like the walls are shaking."
The camaraderie of the meet is special, even the long bus ride they began Monday afternoon. When they're not preparing for their own events, they're poolside, cheering on their teammates.
"Every race – especially finals – my ears are hurting," said Ian Hentenaar. "And by the second day of conference, I can barely speak."
And memories will be made. Last year, Matt Bode was on the 400 freestyle team that set a school record (2:59.70) at the A-10 meet.
"That's something that's going to stick with me for a lifetime," said Bode of the experience with three of his closest friends. "Not necessarily the time, but just getting out of the pool and hugging them right after the race. That was incredible."
Young said his team has been fast in its final preparations since it last competed at Gardner-Webb Feb. 2.
"Usually that means we'll be fast at the meet, too," he said. "We'll see!"
