ROCK HILL, S.C. — Davidson scored the first four goals to start the game and never looked back in opening the 2019 season with a 12-4 road win at Winthrop on a cold Sunday afternoon in women's lacrosse at Eagle Field.
Davidson won its second straight season opener on the road after downing Furman a year ago. Winthrop fell to 1-1 on the season.
Sophomore midfielder Sam Rippley had a strong start to the season by scoring a game-high four goals, including two of the first four Wildcat goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. She would add two more in the second half, helping to start a 6-0 run to finish out the last 25 minutes of the game.
Emily Weld (2), Gianna New (2), Braeden Dial (1) and Jane Digregorio (1) all scored in their first collegiate games, with Dial adding her first two collegiate assists as well. Olivia Carey had a team-high three assists, while Shayne Antolini finished with two points on a goal and an assist.
Davidson's defense shut down the Eagles' offense for most of the day, allowing just the one goal in the entire second half while forcing them into 23 turnovers and causing 15 of them. Sarah Kopp forced three of those turnovers to tie her personal best and four other 'Cats had two each.
Winthrop would get within three at halftime at 6-3 on two goals in the final 1:37. It then scored the first goal of the second half at the 27:54 mark to make it 6-4, but it was all Davidson from there on.
The shot count went to the Wildcats at 26-18 and they also had a 19-18 edge on groundballs. Olivia Carey and Shannon Blee had three groundballs each, while Dial led the team with seven shots.
Between the pipes, Delaney Guhman earned her first career win and finished with six saves to go with two groundballs.
Davidson plays its home opener next Saturday, Feb. 16, against Furman and it will also be Senior Day for the Wildcats.
