
A School Record and a Pair of Wins Highlight Men's T&F Opener at JDL

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Men's track and field freshman Jack Curtin broke the indoor triple jump record in his collegiate debut Sunday at the JDL Early Bird Invite.
Curtin stretched the tape 14.10-meters (46'3.25), breaking an 11-year old mark set by Kwame Som-Pimpong (14.06). The Andover, Mass., product posted the record-setting mark on his sixth and final attempt of the day.
Junior Daniel Alvarez raced away from teammates Raphael Degenero and Max Higgins in the 800-meter, crossing the line in 1:56.36. Degenero and Higgins stopped the clock in 2:00.13 and 2:01.01, respectively. Sophomore John Autry placed fifth.
Davidson opened the day and the season in the 5,000-meter led by sophomore Max Pearson's victory. Pearson edged out UNCG's Alex Roy, stopping the clock in 14:56.31. Classmate Colin Ross. took fourth in 15:08.13, while Trent Turbyfill came home sixth fastest, 15:20.88.
The Wildcat miler contingent took third-seventh, led by freshman Owen Drometer's run of 4:25.25, just ahead of sophomore Owen Drometer in 4:25.84. Junior Jake Carver and freshmen Ben Sniffen Gordon and Miles Kominsky rounded out the fifth-seventh spots.
The 'Cats had a pair of rookies make the 60-meter hurdles finals. Jordan Benson, 8.33 seconds, out-leaned classmate Bryce Anthony, 8.34 seconds for fifth and sixth, respectively.
Sophomore Bryce Kalsu was eighth in the 500-meters, stopping the clock in 1:09.71, while junior Nick Peeples was eighth in the 200-meter dash, 23.30 seconds.
Wrapping up the day on the track was a second-place result in the 4x400-meter relay, anchored by Alvarez's sub-50 seconds effort.
In the throwing circle, freshman Dylan Lageman placed third in the shot put, stretching the tape 14.04-meters (46'0.75). Sophomore Paul Mullinax was seventh in the shot and came back with a fifth-place throw in the weight (14.46m), a mark near the school record.
Davidson freshman Nick Thompkins cleared 1.90-meters (6'2.75) to place seventh in the high jump, while classmate Dylan Ameres stretched the tape 6.55-meters (21'6) for eighth in the long jump. Wildcat junior Langston Stephens mark a triple jump attempt of 12.80-meters (42'2.25), good for seventh.
"Today was a really solid opener for our team. Great to see our freshman contributing right away, very good performances from Jordan and Bryce in the hurdles, and Jack Curtin the triple jump," said Dorector of Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Renny Waldron. "This meet is a rust-buster and it was a good start, but we have a lot of work to do and are looking forward to the opportunity to get better next time we come back to the JDL track in January."
Davidson returns to the track Sunday, Jan. 19 at the JDL January College Kickoff.
