WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Men's track and field posted six victories and three new school records at the JDL January College Kick-off Sunday at JDL Fast Track.
Freshman Bryce Anthony broke the school record in winning fashion in the 60-meter hurdles, stopping the clock in 8.20 seconds, half a second faster than Cory Gaither's mark set on Jan. 26, 2019 at the Patriot Games in Fairfax, Va. The Greensboro, N.C., native also placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 51.38 seconds.
Freshman Nick Tompkins also posted a win in the 60-meter dash, stopping the clock in 7.20. Junior Nick Peeples finished eighth in the event.
Davidson's success rolled on into the distance events as Jack McMahon and Colin Ross went 1-2 in the 3,000-meter run. McMahon edged out his teammate in 8:39.34, less than a second ahead of Ross for the win.
Junior Daniel Alvarez claimed first in the 600-meters with a time of 1:29.89, a new school record. Sophomore Jonah Lane also won, breaking 2:00 to win the 800-meters.
Davidson also won on the field side as senior James Davis cleared 4.30-meters (14'1.25) to win the pole vault. Anthony was second after clearing 4.15m.
"The team performed very well today. This has been about the best all-around meet from our guys coming off the break that I can remember. To get some school records and move up the conference list in so many events is going to give our guys a lot of confidence. We don't need added motivation, but today was a glimpse of what the possibilities can be if we continue working hard and executing in competition."
A trio of 'Cats went 3-4-5 in the 1k led by Raphael Oettl in 2:29.19. Oettl set a new flat track record in the event and leads the conference. Freshmen Ben Gordon Sniffen and Miles Kominsky followed behind their teammate.
Junior Nick Peeples claimed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.11 seconds.
In the shot put, Dylan Lageman stretched the tape 13.95-meters (45'9.25), good for fifth. Sophomore Paul Mullinax posted a personal best throw in the weight, stretching the tape 13.40-meters (43'11.75).
Davidson returns to the track Friday, Jan. 24 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University and again Saturday at the JDL Flat is Flat Meet back at the Fast Track.
