ST. LOUIS – On the heels of the All-Conference Team announcement, four Wildcats have been selected to the Academic All-Pioneer Football League Team, announced Wednesday.
Davidson garnered three first team honorees, junior running back Wesley Dugger and senior offensive lineman Ethan Steinbacher and linebacker classmate George Hatalowich. Junior quarterback Tyler Phelps was named to the second team. All four are making their first appearance to the Academic PFL Team.
Dugger, the program's all-time leading rusher has also shown his prowess in the classroom. The Henrico, Va., product was also named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District Team in November. He earned his third consecutive All-Conference first team nod in as many tries.
Steinbacher, like Dugger, has also earned outside academic laurels, being named a William V. Campbell Trophy Semifinalist earlier this season. Steinbacher helped lead the FCS second ranked rushing attack and was named an All-PFL first teamer. He will graduate in 2020 with a degree in computer sciences.
Hatalowich, an economics major from Hummelstown, Pa., led the team in tackles and was the fourth Wildcat named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team for his outstanding commitment to community and service.
Studying economics and running the Davidson offense comes natural to Phelps. The Gulf Breeze, Fla., native was the third most efficient quarterback in the PFL last season, completing nearly 50 percent of his passes for over 1,100 yards and nine touchdowns.
The four honorees are the most since Davidson had as many in 2014.
The Academic PFL Team is voted on by the Sports Information Directors of the league institutions. To be on the ballot, players must have a cumulative grade point average above 3.3 and be a significant contributor to their team.
